LEARNING TOGETHER: The Story of America
Thousands of black men fought during the American Revolution. Because of Southern slave owners’ fears of armed black men and freedom granted to patriot black soldiers, congress considered ending the practice of enlisting the help of free and enslaved black men. However, the threat of slaves joining the British army (which promised them freedom) caused congress to change its mind and continue allowing slaves to fight for America’s freedom.
