LEARNING TOGETHER: The Story of America

Founded in 1908, Allensworth, California was the first all-African American town in the west. It’s founder, Lieutenant Colonel Allen Allensworth was born a slave and became a highly ranked black officer in the army. Upon retiring, Allensworth looked for a place where African Americans could escape the suffering and discrimination created by Jim Crow laws. Allensworth along with other black leaders built a town where African Americans created their own schools, businesses, government and lived free.
